Our College

Swami Vivekananda

Even before Swami Vivekananda started the Belur Math, he wanted to establish a Math for women with the Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi as its centre. However, it was during the Holy Mother's Birth Centenary in 1954, that Sri Sarada Math came into existence. In 1960, the Trustees of Sri Sarada Math founded the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Association with the object of propagating educational, cultural, charitable, medical and similar activities among women and children. Through the headquarters at Dakshineswar, Calcutta, and its branch centres in different parts of India, the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission seeks to serve women and children in all possible ways, irrespective of caste, creed, colour and nationality. At present the Math and the Mission run about 25 centres in different parts of India and also abroad.

Vivekananda Vidyabhavan, a partly residential degree college for women was the first educational institution started by the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission. It came into existence in 1961 as a humble effort to carry out Swami Vivekananda's ideals of education among women. The inaugural meeting to set up the college took place at 33 Nayapatty Road, Kolkata-55, on 10th March, 1961. The meeting was presided by most revered Swami Madhavananda, the then General Secretary of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission. Housed initially in a one-roomed makeshift structure, with thirty one students and a handful of young, idealistic and enthusiastic teachers and monastic members, the college today stands among the premier women's institutions of the state.

From the Principal's Desk

The Principal

"The uplift of the woman, the awakening of the mass, must come first and then only can any real good come about for the country, for India." felt Swami Vivekananda. Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Vivekananda Vidyabhavan was established by the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission in 1961 with the aim of fostering higher education among women along the ideals of Swami Vivekananda.

Education, according to Swamiji, is not the amount of information that is put into one's brain and, undigested, runs riot there. In his opinion, the balanced combination of secular and spiritual training constitutes the true economics of education. Following his vision, the college has always worked towards a holistic approach towards education. Affiliated to the West Bengal State University, it currently offers 11 Honours courses and 14 General courses at the undergraduate level, and the recently introduced postgraduate course in Philosophy. In addition to the prescribed university curriculum, the college offers quite a few career-oriented courses, like the 52 week Preparatory Course for Public Sector Jobs held by the George School of Competitive Exams (GSCE); several Skill Development Training Programmes by the George Telegraph Training Institute (GTTI), and certified by the Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU); Spoken English and Interpersonal Skill Development Training Programme by ELTA GLOBAL; and a 6 month Certificate Course titled 'Basic Skills of Counselling and Stress Management' in collaboration with Centre for Counselling Service and Studies in Self Development (CCSSSD), Jadavpur University. All the courses are held in the campus, and are offered at subsidized rates for students of this college, past and present.

A unique feature of this College is its intensive Value Education Programme which successfully instils a strong understanding of, and respect for, cultural and religious diversity and moral values.

We believe that these courses, in addition to the year round co-curricular and outreach activities adopted by the students under the able guidance of the dedicated faculty and staff, will help nurture and strengthen the physical, intellectual, moral, and spiritual faculties of the students, and create self-reliant and confident Indian women, with a strong sense of moral and social responsibilities.

Vision / Aims and Objectives

Ramamkrishna Sarada Mission Vivekananda Vidyabhavan is founded on the ideals of Swamiji, who famously observed, "It is not possible for a bird to fly on only one wing". He believed that society cannot progress depending on men alone. It has to harness female power too. The college, founded on the vision of Swami Vivekananda, marks a bold departure from the existing pattern of educational institutions. It provides a peaceful and apolitical academic environment, ideal for pursuit of studies. Here the students are placed under the direct supervision and care of the dedicated monastic members of Sri Sarada Math and Mission, and full time employed teachers. The system enables the students to come into intimate contact with their teachers and to receive an all-round education in an atmosphere of serenity, peace, discipline and morality. The college thus does not believe in churning out good students and successful career-women, but in creating self-reliant human beings with humane principles and a strong sense of responsibility towards society. It works towards creating an ideal society based on the principles of equality, freedom, justice and tolerance and respect for religious diversity and moral values, emphasized in the Constitution of India.
